Moot Court

Moot court is a co-curricular activity at law schools where students of law participate in simulated court or arbitration proceedings and in oral argument.

The experience of moot courts equips the students with the analytical, argumentative, observational and drafting skills. It gives them exposure to the field of litigation in various legal forums, both national and international.

About Moot Court

It is a simulation of actual court room proceedings, wherein teams comprising of law students are required to present their case in front a bench of judges in a simulated environment. Students have to research upon a problem given to them prior to the rounds. The students prepare written arguments with the help of statutory provisions and case laws to be presented orally before a bench of judges and argue on the points of law and facts.

Mooting Activity in College

KLE Law College encourages, supports and trains the students to participate in such competitions. The result has been nothing short of fantastic as over the past few years as the students have not only increased their participation, but also won many prizes and awards in various national moot court competitions. The college also organizes Intra College Moot Court Competition to screen and train the students for national and international moot courts. Moreover, as a part of curriculum, the Final Year students have to engage in moot courts on three different sets of problems. The institution has state of art facilities, for conducting and training the students for Moot Courts, including a dedicated Moot Court hall to give the students a court like experience. The institution has a robust screening and selection process for participation in different moot courts. A faculty in-charge is assigned for each moot court, which conducts internal screening rounds and finally selects a team to represent the college in the respective moot court competition.

About Intra-College Moot Court Competition

The college conducts intra level moot court competition every year to give the students a start in the field of moot courts. This activity enables them to prepare for the regional, national and international level moot court competition. It serves as the breeding ground for the potential mooters, whereby the students test their ability and skills involved in a mooting exercise. This competition also serves as a preliminary screening exercise. Each year students show a lot of enthusiasm to participate and gradually prove their mettle to represent college in the National and other Moot Court Competitions.

The intra-college Moot is divided into two divisions. The first division consists of 1st and 2nd Year students of 5 year course and the second division consists of rest of the batches of 5 year course and all the batches of 3 year course. Separate problems are framed for both the divisions to test their analytical, research, observational and argumentative skills.

In the latest edition of Intra-College Moot Court Competition, conducted in October 2017, a total of 117 teams from both divisions participated. Winners from the first division was the team comprising of Muskaan Aggarwal and Syed Raihanul Hussain of 2nd Year of BBALLB , while the team consisting of Chaitra Bhat and Nitin Kushwaha of 4th Year of BBALLB won the second division Moot court. The Best Speaker from First Division was awarded to Sneha Suresh of 1st Year of BBALLB and from 2nd Division was awarded to Chaitra Bhat of 4th Year of BBALLB.

About Surana and Surana and KLE Law College National Moot

This competition is a joint venture of KLE Law College, Bengaluru and Surana and Surana, International Attorneys. It is an ISO certified law firm having their presence overseas with expertise in Arbitration, Corporate law, Civil and Criminal litigation, taxation, etc. The theme of the Moot Court is based on Constitutional Law. The 1st edition of the competition was held in 2016-17 and the 2nd edition in 2017-18. In the past two editions the competition has witnessed an influx of challenging rounds of arguments before simulated benches of Supreme Court, by student teams of various famed law institutions of the country. Additionally, the competition has been the learning ground for the students of KLE Law College, while the students watch the competitors closely and understand different legal issues.

1st Surana and Surana and KLE Law College National Constitutional Moot Court Competition

The first edition of the competition was organized from 24th – 26th March 2017. The Competition was inaugurated on 24th March by Hon’ble Mr. Justice P. Vishwanatha Shetty, Lokayukta, State of Karnataka, Prof. (Dr.) C.K.N. Raja, Professor and Former Dean, Department of Studies in Law, University of Mysore and Prof. Neils B. Schaumann, President and Dean, California Western School of Law, San Diego. Dr. J. M Mallikarjunaiah, Principal, KLE Law College and Dr. S Ravichandran, Advocate and Head, Academic initiatives, Surana & Surana International Attorneys, presided over the function.

42 teams, from top law schools, hailing from different parts of the country participated in the competition. On 25th March, preliminary rounds I, II and octa-final rounds were conducted, which were judged by eminent advocates from Bengaluru.

On 26th March, Quarter final, Semi Final and Final rounds were concluded. The qualifying teams for the Final round were CMR KLE Law College, Bengaluru and Rajiv Gandhi National University of Law, Patiala. Hon’ble Mr. Justice Jayant Patel, Judge, High Court of Karnataka, Shri. Udaya Holla, Senior Advocate and Former Advocate General of Karnataka, and Shri. A. S. Ponnanna, Additional Advocate General, High Court of Karnataka judged the final round of the competition. Prof. (Dr.) C.S. Patil, Vice Chancellor (Actg.) Karnataka State Law University, Hubballi, Hon’ble Justice Jayant Patel, Shri. Udaya Holla, Shri. A. S. Ponnanna were the guests of honour for the Valedictory function.

The results were announced by Dr. S Ravichandran. CMR KLE Law College, Bengaluru was declared the winner of the competition and Rajiv Gandhi National University of Law, Patiala took the spot of Runners-up.

2nd Surana and Surana and KLE Law College National Constitutional Moot Court Competition

The second edition of the competition was organized from 13th – 15th April 2018. The Competition was inaugurated by Hon’ble Mr. Justice Raghvendra S. Chauhan Judge, High Court of Karntaka on 13th April 2018 in the gracious presence of Prof.(Dr.) V.B. Coutinho, former Vice Chancellor, Gulbarga University, Prof.(Dr.) V Sudesh, Principal and Dean, Post Graduate Dept. of Studies in Law, KLE Law College, Bengaluru, Mr. Prabhuling K Navadgi, Senior Advocate and Additional Solicitor General of India. The welcome address was rendered by Dr. J. M Mallikarjunaiah, Principal KLE Law College.

The competition witnessed participation of forty four teams from across the nation. On 14th April, preliminary rounds I, II and octa-final rounds were conducted, which were judged by eminent advocates

On 15th April, Quarter final, Semi Final and Final rounds were concluded. The qualifying teams for the Final round were National Law University, Odisha (NLUO) and National University of Advanced Legal Studies, Kochi (NUALS), which was judged by Hon’ble Mr. Justice G. Narendar, Hon’ble Mr. Justice Dixit Krishna Shripad and Hon’ble Mr. Justice Siddappa Sunil Dutt Yadav, Mr. Ashok Haranalli, Senior Advocate and Former Advocate General and Mr. P.S. Rajagopal, Senior Advocate.

The valedictory function witnessed welcome address by Dr. Anita MJ, Assistant Prof. KLE Law College and distribution of prizes. Team representing National University of Advanced Legal Studies, Kerala won the winner’s trophy and National Law University, Odisha won the runners up trophy. Ms. Tresa Ajay of National University of Advanced Legal Studies, Kerala was awarded as the Best Student Advocate and the team representing School of Law, Sastra Deemed to be University was awarded the best memorial prize. The Spirit of Surana prize was awarded to Alliance School of Law, Alliance University, Bengaluru based on participant votes.
